Send Videos over WhatsApp with Windows Phone 8.0

The Back story

Recently I had the chance of coming into contact with a Nokia Lumia 520 running Windows Phone 8.0 and its own share of distastes.
Being an avid Ubuntu user, I keep trying to find new ways of happily using my new found device without going through the recommended channels prescribed by Microsoft (I’m looking at you, Zune).

Among its various restrictions I came across a very annoying one with a rather simple fix where you could not send videos through WhatsApp if you had acquired those videos through another means. Say, videos copied from your computer onto the phone.

My research to find a solution to this led me a post on the Microsoft Mobile Community (formerly Nokia Support Discussions and very soon Mobile Devices, whaaa?). It pointed that this was a major flaw in Windows Phone 8.0 and hopefully would be fixed in future updates.
OK, by the time you read this I guess...

The Rescue of the Tin Woodman

Below is an excerpt from the classic tale of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum (1900). A personal favourite. The rescue of the Tin Woodman is a situation I can equally relate to.

Enjoy.

Dorothy was thinking so earnestly as they walked along that she did not notice when the Scarecrow stumbled into a hole and rolled over to the side of the road. Indeed he was obliged to call to her to help him up again.

“Why didn’t you walk around the hole?” asked the Tin Woodman.

“I don’t know enough,” replied the Scarecrow cheerfully. “My head is stuffed with straw, you know, and that is why I am going to Oz to ask him for some brains.”

“Oh, I see,” said the Tin Woodman. “But, after all, brains are not the best things in the world.”

“Have you any?” inquired the Scarecrow.

“No, my head is quite empty,” answered the Woodman. “But once I had brains, and a heart also; so, having tried...

#TeachTheWeb

I have been following Mozilla’s Webmaker training since it was launched last week.

Last week’s concentration was on helping build Open Educational Resources (OER) together. With a link to this page (good read though, you should check it out).

The section which caught my attention the most was this:

It drew my mind to the clear similarities between the ancient cavemen drawings to the now sophisticated web.
And with the right amount of knowledge and skill sets among ourselves, everyone, not just a select few can help push the web forward till we reach another juncture where our intrinsic human capabilities help churn a new tool for capturing human knowledge.

We started by getting used to the Webmaker teaching Kits so we could help fulfill the web literacy map objectives by documenting what is that we have to share. Project ideas or activity guides. You could either remix from a whole...

K3772 Huawei modem not detecting on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) ?

OK I’ll admit, I can be an Ubuntu buff some times.
Scratch that, almost all the time.
I find it a refreshing getaway from the monotonous Windows look on things. And from my part of the world where computers are synonymous with Windows run machines, you’ll get the point.
Here, Macs are “complicated” and mentioning a distro from the Linux community is bound to fetch a “wha ?”.

Because of this when my new laptop couldn’t run effectively on Ubuntu 12.04 (problem: missing drivers not found with that Ubuntu version since some hardware components were much recent than the distro) that instead of resorting to the very popular Windows 8 OS which came with the laptop.

Disclaimer : This is the procedures to a hack. It is in no way fashioned to solve your problems and attach the specified drivers to your computer. And therefore should not be considered as an all out solution. I suppose you are

Vodafone Ghana USSD codes

The reaction of most people with a tech savvy are to scourge an internet search engine (Google maybe) for solutions to problems they face on a daily basis (could be techie problems or nah).

Odds are someone faced the same problem and decided to blog about it. Here is a similar scenario. But search as I may, no solution of any kind came running to my rescue.

Giving in to defeat (something I should have done long ago), I called the Customer Care center (which was surprisingly quick to respond this time).

Turns out the solution to my problem of having to unsubscribe and putting an end to the pestering re-subscription was to;

Dial *700*3

And either Press 1 to continue or Press 2 to cancel.

The other method which the kind customer service personnel showed me was to;

Dial *700

Where upon being handed with a plethora of options you can choose to unsubscribe by picking option 3; Remove...
